Day Fourteen: Day Yud Daled
Nevo and Joanna decided to book a hotel in the heart of the city for a few days to experience all Tel Aviv has to offer. That gave Don and I the chance to visit some of my family in Tel Aviv, and also explore the city more on our own before my intensive Hebrew classes started. We took a cab to Gane Tzahala, my aunt’s neighborhood in Northern Tel Aviv, and the cab driver commented, “Why would you want to go there? There is no “gan” (garden) and there is no “Tzahal” (army) there.
Don and I arrived and were greeted by my aunt Vered, uncle Pini, cousin David, and their friendly but very old dog, Buddy. I spent a long while chatting with my family in the living room, and “ha sheelat million ha dollar,” also one of my vocab terms for Ulpan, seems to be, “are you going to ever move to Israel?” Philosophically, I’m all for it for several reasons. With an existential threat to the small country, I think the best way to show support for Israel is by moving there and productively contributing to society. Also family life is much closer and more open in Israel, the food is fresher, and people seem to enjoy life a bit more- taking frequent vacations all over the world, chatting in cafes until 2 in the morning, and indulging in gourmet restaurants on a regular basis.
Vered told me that she lived for five years in Los Angeles in the same house and never met her next-door neighbor, until there was a severe earthquake and he came to see if they were ok. In Israel, Vered’s neighbor calls her from across the street to tell her she can’t see her through her window and is wondering where she went. There is a sense of interconnectedness between people here that often crosses the line into nosiness, but nevertheless feels warmer than in the United States.
On a practical level it’s not so easy to make aliyah. The cost of living in Israel is higher than in the United States, and adjusting to a new language and culture is easier said than done. Having just graduated college, I’m open to the many directions my life could take me in the coming years. Maybe someday I’ll call Israel my home, but in any event, a couple weeks brushing up my Hebrew in Ulpan can’t hurt.

The Grass Is Always Greener...
Day Thirteen: Day Yud Gimmel
Wanting to get back to Tel Aviv, Don and I decided to hitch a ride with Nevo and Joanna. They had spent some time at a bed and breakfast on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Kineret, the largest freshwater lake in Israel, so we met them there on their way back South. Nevo told us that the night before, they stopped at a beach recommended by their friend, but they were really disappointed by it because it was a camping beach filled with lots of broken bottles and litter. He really wanted to find a better beach to relax on before the long drive back, so we stopped at a coffee shop to ask for directions. A barista told us that, “all the nice beaches are on the other side of the Kineret”. We pulled out a map, located the names of several places on the opposite side of the lake, and set off in search of a more glamorous beach. About a half an hour later, we arrived at the opposite side of the Kineret, only to find more beaches with discarded diapers, broken bottles, and food wrappers floating in the water. We asked a local, “so, where are the nice beaches around here?” He pointed in the direction we just came from and responded, “The nice beaches are all on that side of the lake.” I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the Kineret…
We gave up on the beach plan, and instead decided to go for a hike. This specific hike was recommended to us because the trail is shaded and you cross through rivers, so don’t suffer in the heat. We arrived to a parking lot filled with tour busses, and could see large guided groups preparing to do the hike. We rushed to get ahead of the big groups and start down the “wet path”. Instead of a path that occasionally crosses a river, you literally walk in the river the entire length of the hike. I had sandals on, and kept stubbing my toes and stumbling over submerged rocks and tree branches. Parts of the river were almost too deep to stand in, and many hikers swam. I thought it was a pretty fun adventure, but Joanna kept asking Nevo, “Why are you taking me on a hike through a swamp??” I’m just glad there are no wild crocodiles in Israel, because I felt like it was a place they would like to live in. Joanna was relieved when we reached the end of the hike, and we drove back to Tel Aviv in our soggy clothes.

Sitting on the patio for breakfast, Don’s uncle Nissim patiently spoke to me in Hebrew, telling stories of his visits to America. In 2001, he was in Chicago and went to go see the Sears Tower. On the elevator ride to the top, they played a video about the construction of the building and Nissim remarked, “If something bad ever happened to this building, it would be a great tragedy”. The next day he flew to New York to visit his daughter’s famiy. They took him to the twin towers and asked him if he would like to go up to the top. He said, “I was just at the tallest building in Chicago, why would I want to go up these?” Instead, they sat at a cafĂ© at the base of the building and went on to see other attractions. The next day was the morning of September 11th. Nissim turned on the TV and saw the first tower on fire. He did not understand English, and thought he was watching a strange movie. He tried to change channels, but every channel seemed to be playing the same movie. It was not until his daughter came home from work that he understood that there was an attack on the buildings. I looked at him in shock, unsure how to respond with my basic Hebrew vocabulary. I guess living in a country that is constantly under attack, makes one conscious of the false sense of security felt elsewhere. People in Israel have needed to adapt and become tough to continue on with everyday life, and in recent years Americans have also realized that they take a lot of freedoms for granted. It reminded me why they sometimes call Israelis “sabras”, the fruit of a cactus, because they are sweet on the inside, but have thick skin.

The last time I visited the area, three years ago, I got what the Israelis call a “sun attack”, and suffered from headaches, dizziness, fever, and dehydration. I remember trying to sleep it off in the coolest, darkest, and quietest place available in the house- the bomb shelter. This time around, I came more prepared and brought a bottle of water, hat, and portable fan with me everywhere I went, and avoided leaving air-conditioned rooms in the middle of the day whenever possible. I took a siesta, and awoke in the evening when it had cooled off outside. Don was anxious to borrow Felix’s tractor and go for a ride in the orchards before sunset, and I decided to join him. Felix backed the tractor out of his garage, pointed us in the right direction, and we drove off. Much of the land surrounding Kiriyat Shmona is agricultural. We passed orange groves, apple orchards, apricot and plum trees, and fields of cattle. The surrounding hills looked exactly like the ones behind my family’s home in Carmel Valley, San Diego. So much so, that it made me feel homesick. It’s funny how you can travel halfway across the world and see something that looks just like your backyard.

The Road to Kiriyat Shmona
Day Eleven: Yom Yud Alef
Having many more of Don’s aunts, uncles, and cousins to visit, we set out for Kiriyat Shmona, which also happens to be the city Don’s mom and dad first met in. Nevo was driving on the twisting roads down the mountain from Baram, and he spotted a sign that said "Naftali Scenic Lookout", and pointed down a gravel path. Nevo has a tendency to veer off the road and stop at every scenic viewpoint he can find, so we began driving down the bumpy, narrow pathway. It took us along the edge of the mountain where we could see the entire Hulah Valley below. Since there was no place we could turn the car around, and the path appeared to continue down the mountain, we kept driving to see where it would take us. After winding down the switchbacks, Kiriyat Shmona came into sight, and we discovered an exit through a residential neighborhood. We arrived in Kiriyat Shmona safely, but were later informed that we accidentally drove on a gravel path only meant for bicycles and army vehicles, and it could have potentially taken us into Lebanon if we continued going on it. At least it had a scenic view.
For our afternoon activity, we drove nearby to Beit Hillel to go rafting on the upper tributaries of the Jordan River. Galila went to purchase our tickets, and I could hear her arguing at the counter.
Galila: “We are staying in a bed and breakfast in the area, don’t you offer discounts for that?”
Employee: “Yes, but you need a coupon book”.
Galila: “But I left it by accident…”
Employee: “What’s the name of the bed and breakfast you are staying at?”
Galila: “Um…Felix’s Bed and Breakfast”
Employee: “I’ve never heard of that…”
Galila: “You haven’t heard of it? It’s an amazing place!”
This went back and forth for a while, and eventually the employee gave in and let her have a small discount. The river Dan, also my boyfriend Don’s namesake, was more of a mellow, shady stream than the raging torrent advertised by the boat rental company. Galila, Nevo, Joanna, Don, and I were in one big inflatable raft. Nobody but me felt like paddling, so we spun in circles, occasionally knocking into tree branches, other rafters, and an abandoned mattress floating downstream. I eventually gave up, and just let the current help us creep along. Toward the end of the journey, we were warned of rapids. I was picturing class five rapids, but instead it was a mere three-foot drop over some submerged boulders. A photographer on the riverbank patiently waited for each group of rafters to pass over the sole rapid, so he could snap a picture of how extreme the experience was, and sell it to them in the gift shop. At the end of the route, some tan and jocky Israeli guys hoisted our raft out of the river, and directed us towards the bus that would take us back to the parking lot. We passed by the kiosk selling our pictures, but we were told “come back later, the computer isn’t working”.
We left souvenirless, and drove to Don’s uncle Felix’s bed and breakfast, which is not actually called “Felix’s Bed and Breakfast”. We arrived to a warm welcome, and were given our own bungalow, with a Jacuzzi tub oddly situated in the living room. We reconvened at Felix’s house, and were joined by more, and more of Don’s relatives. Don’s aunt Rina, who is an excellent cook, began to bring out plates of salads and appetizers, as the men set up a charcoal grill. While we were waiting for the burgers to grill, Don’s cousin Moor took us to see his friend’s pet donkey. I felt bad for the poor animal as Moor, who is large for his age, tried to ride it around the block. I’m not sure who was more stubborn, Moor or the donkey. We returned to Felix’s to discover some new items on the menu for the evening: grilled chicken hearts and liver. Though I was told they are a delicacy, and kosher, I decided to pass on the opportunity.

Family Meditation Time and Druze Pita
Day Ten: Yom Yud
Don’s aunt Sonia is a relatively renowned energy healer, mystic, and UFO researcher in Israel. The first time I met her, she told me I looked like an alien. The comment caught me totally off guard, unsure if it was an insult of compliment. She took the family to her studio on the kibbutz for a group meditation session. We laid down on padded mats on the floor, and she guided us to deepen our breathing and relax our bodies. Though I didn’t understand all of her Hebrew, the guided meditation was familiar to me from the yoga classes I attend in Chicago.
At first, meditation is difficult because your mind is cluttered- you think about your foot itching, how you need to remember to clean your room, how the air conditioner is humming too loudly. But like anything, the more you practice, the easier it is for your mind to clear, and for you to sit in silence for extended periods of time without fidgeting. After about twenty minutes, I could hear loud snoring from two directions in the room, and Don chuckling to himself. I tried to ignore everything, breathe deeply, and remain still. Eventually Sonia’s voice broke the silence, and instructed us to slowly bring ourselves back to the present moment. We sat in a circle holding hands, and I could feel my fingers tingling from what Sonia called “energia”. She said it was the first time she worked with an entire family at the same time, and that she could feel our “ahava gedola”, the strong bond between us. I walked away from the session feeling totally refreshed, as if I had an entire night’s sleep.
That afternoon, Don’s cousin Sagi insisted on taking us over the windy mountain roads to his favorite pita stand in a nearby Druze village. The Druze are a secretive religious group which is an offshoot of Islam. They have their own culture and traditions, but still play an active part of Israeli society, and serve in the army. The Druze people are famous for their hospitality. The pita stand was a small cement booth with a shady patio and some plastic tables and chairs. An older woman was sitting in behind a giant convex metal grill, lighting the fire underneath it. We placed our orders, and plates of homemade pickles and olives were brought to the table.
The woman motioned to me to come over and watch how she made the pita. She pulled out a plastic container of dough, put it on a floured table, and got to work slapping it into a flat circle. She then lifted it into the air; twirling it on her elbows, and stretching it to three times it’s previous size. She acrobatically threw the paper-thin pita onto a circular pillow, flipped it onto the grill, and pulled it off with her bare hands. The whole process took under two minutes. The pita was smeared with labne, olive oil, and zataar, then rolled into a burrito shape and wrapped in paper. It was a delicious and filling snack. I wonder if it would catch on in the United States, you would just need to find some talented pita twirlers.
We drove back to Dovev, a moshav, or small farming community by Kibbutz Baram to meet Don’s aunt Ziva, and his grandmother. Don’s grandmother spoke no English, but she kept staring at me, making funny faces, and giggling. She told Don to “tie me up so I don’t get away”, and after an awkward pause, she elaborated, “I mean not with rope, with hugs”. They turned on the TV to watch Cochav Nolad, the Israeli version of American Idol, and I opted to go outside and play with their friendly dog.

Day 9: Yom Tet
For a complete change of scenery, we drove North to Kibbutz Baram, literally a stone’s throw from the Lebanon border. Don’s cousins, Sagi, Limor, and Limor’s dog Lola, joined us at the train station in Tel Mond. We somehow managed to cram five people, seven bags, and a dog, into our small, Israeli style car for a rather uncomfortable drive. Lola looked remarkably like my family’s black lab named Toby, and it made me realize how much I missed having a dog around, even if she was panting in my face for the two-hour drive.
Sagi and Limor grew up on the kibbutz, a lifestyle that is slowly becoming extinct. Kibbutzim were first established by Russian Jews, who were trying to develop the barren land. Nobody had a salary; they just woke up early, worked the fields, and had communal meals, housing, and daycare. Over the years, many kibbutzim failed and those that remained became more capitalist, even selling off plots of land to families. Kibbutz Baram is one of the last working Kibbutzim in all of Israel, and second richest, next to Kibbutz Sasa, which builds and sells defense technology to the United States.
We arrived in Baram, and were greeted by Don’s athletic uncle Moshe, who once a year rides his bicycle to Eilat, nearly a 300 mile journey. He took us for a meal at the cheder ochel, a dining hall reminiscent of the one from my college. The whole Kibbutz actually had the vibe of a college campus, with small uniform apartments, young volunteers smoking by the pool, bicycles strewn on every lawn, and a predominantly laid back attitude. Don’s dad proclaimed the Kibbutz has the best schnitzel he’s ever had, and he cleaned his plate after multiple trips to the buffet.
That evening, the Kibbutz organized a “summer party”, with a carnival for the kids, and a disco party after their bedtime. A kibbutz would be a wonderful place to grow up. The self-contained community with multiple parks, a zoo, a museum, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a soccer field, a movie theater, and an excess of playmates, gives the children free reign. At dusk, every child on the kibbutz seemed to be congregated around the stage on soccer field, waiting for the magician to start. Club-like strobe lights flashed, and electronically remixed children’s songs pumped on the speakers, when the magician appeared and began pulling scarves out of his mouth. He chose a lucky boy named Ori to assist him in his act. Ori had an infectious giggle, and the magician played jokes on him, making things appear and disappear out of his closed fists. Don and I helped ourselves to some popcorn and ice cream, and left shortly after they broke out the kegs of beer for the adults.
For a complete change of scenery, we drove North to Kibbutz Baram, literally a stone’s throw from the Lebanon border. Don’s cousins, Sagi, Limor, and Limor’s dog Lola, joined us at the train station in Tel Mond. We somehow managed to cram five people, seven bags, and a dog, into our small, Israeli style car for a rather uncomfortable drive. Lola looked remarkably like my family’s black lab named Toby, and it made me realize how much I missed having a dog around, even if she was panting in my face for the two-hour drive.
Sagi and Limor grew up on the kibbutz, a lifestyle that is slowly becoming extinct. Kibbutzim were first established by Russian Jews, who were trying to develop the barren land. Nobody had a salary; they just woke up early, worked the fields, and had communal meals, housing, and daycare. Over the years, many kibbutzim failed and those that remained became more capitalist, even selling off plots of land to families. Kibbutz Baram is one of the last working Kibbutzim in all of Israel, and second richest, next to Kibbutz Sasa, which builds and sells defense technology to the United States.
We arrived in Baram, and were greeted by Don’s athletic uncle Moshe, who once a year rides his bicycle to Eilat, nearly a 300 mile journey. He took us for a meal at the cheder ochel, a dining hall reminiscent of the one from my college. The whole Kibbutz actually had the vibe of a college campus, with small uniform apartments, young volunteers smoking by the pool, bicycles strewn on every lawn, and a predominantly laid back attitude. Don’s dad proclaimed the Kibbutz has the best schnitzel he’s ever had, and he cleaned his plate after multiple trips to the buffet.
That evening, the Kibbutz organized a “summer party”, with a carnival for the kids, and a disco party after their bedtime. A kibbutz would be a wonderful place to grow up. The self-contained community with multiple parks, a zoo, a museum, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a soccer field, a movie theater, and an excess of playmates, gives the children free reign. At dusk, every child on the kibbutz seemed to be congregated around the stage on soccer field, waiting for the magician to start. Club-like strobe lights flashed, and electronically remixed children’s songs pumped on the speakers, when the magician appeared and began pulling scarves out of his mouth. He chose a lucky boy named Ori to assist him in his act. Ori had an infectious giggle, and the magician played jokes on him, making things appear and disappear out of his closed fists. My Jerusalem Birthday and The World's Largest Plate of Hummus
Day 7: Yom Zayin
“Ha yom yom huledet, ha yom yom huledet, ha yom yom huledet shel Sarah…” Tami, Shalom, and Galila serenaded me in the kitchen when I went to get breakfast. Today, I turned 22 years old on the 22nd of June, a very luck birthday according to my superstitious grandmother. Instead of cake and candles, I got to do something much cooler; go to Jerusalem and put my birthday wish in the Western Wall.
When we first arrived, I noticed it was not the Jerusalem I remembered from my last trip. So much had been built, renovated, and cleaned up, that it felt like a new city. I remembered the orthodox jews, the crowded shouk, and the walls of the city. Now there were upscale shopping malls, a brand new train system, and world-class hotels and restaurants. It was an interesting juxtaposition of ancient and modern.
We walked down a street that seemed like one, big, extended gift shop, and arrived at the security checkpoint at the entrance of the Western Wall. After passing through the metal detectors, I observed a woman at the wall praying from an ipad application for the siddur. We had no time to stop and pray ourselves, because we were booked for a tour of the underground tunnels excavated beneath the wall. The tour was all in Hebrew, so my understanding of it was filtered through Don. The Western Wall is the last remaining structure from the second temple, the holiest place for Jews, which was destroyed 2,000 years ago. Since then, the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem was built literally on top of this site. In the tunnels underground, we followed the length of the wall and could look up and see in the layers of dirt how buildings were constructed on top of the ruins. It was a fascinating tour, and I got to tuck a small prayer written on a piece of paper into the cracks of the giant stones in the subterranean wall.
After exiting the refreshingly cool tunnels into the searing heat, I hopped in a cab with Don to go to Ben Yehuda street. I planned to meet up with Kady, my friend from college, in this area of Jerusalem best know for it’s excellent shopping, restaurants, and bar scene. We sat in a small cafĂ© and ordered salads while someone’s pet husky wandered around under the tables, panting in the heat. The dogs and cats in Israel are almost never on leashes, and are allowed to roam unsupervised in the streets. The animals always look a bit mangy and hungry. When I spoke to Don’s uncle Nissim about my dog Toby, he seemed shocked that we let him live indoors. “My dog has never in his life set foot in my house” he said. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable a husky must feel kept outdoors in this weather, though.
After sunset, we met up with Don’s family and walked back to the old city for a light show. Once a summer, abstract light instillations are put all over the city, with routes of different colors weaving in and out of the ancient walled pathways. After passing under some Chihulyesque sculptures of light, we were led to an alcove where a band was playing and a laser show was projecting on the stone walls. We stopped and listened for a while, totally transported by the incredible visuals. It was definitely a birthday to remember.

With the morning to spend in Jerusalem, we set out on foot back to Ben Yehuda Street. There were street musicians, tourists, Ultra-Orthodox, and secular Jews, it was a melting pot of cultures and religions. Don and I went exploring on our own and found the building of the Israeli nature conservancy, which looked like a castle. It had a beautiful garden in the courtyard, a shady oasis, which was a welcomed discovery in the hottest part of the day.
In a small side street, we found a shop selling sabbich, a dish Don has been raving about since we arrived in Israel. It consists of a fresh pita stuffed with Israeli salad, grilled eggplant, hard-boiled eggs, and tahini. Don and I split one, since we already gorged ourselves on the impressive breakfast buffet at the hotel.
After check out time, we piled back into the rental cars and drove to a lookout point. We got lost on the way in an area called The German Colony, which looked like a collection of charming French countryside villas and cafes. I would really like to return and explore that area more, because it had a totally different vibe than the rest of Jerusalem.
We eventually found our way and stopped on the top of a mountain where we could see all of the sprawling neighborhoods of Jerusalem. There is a law here, that all buildings must be constructed from Jerusalem stone, to keep the character of the ancient times. This dusty beige stone makes the city look like a series of sand castles from afar. At sunset, everything glows a golden yellow, earning the nickname “Jerusalem of Gold”.
Next on the agenda was Mt. Herzl, a memorial cemetery for many of the war heroes and founders of Israel. Unfortunately, we arrived five minutes after the gates were locked. Instead, we decided to stop in Abu Gosh, for what was rumored to be the best hummus in the country. It was difficult to find parking for the Abu Gosh Restaurant, whose lot was filled with some of the fanciest cars we had seen since yet- a Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW.
Behind the host stand, there hung an autographed poster of the blonde pop phenomenon, Justin Bieber. I pointed to the poster and the host confirmed, yes, Justin Bieber ate here. This place must really have some good hummus, I thought. We ordered the works; salads, pita, hummus, tahini, kebabs, and a pitcher of lemonade. I noticed that our placemats proudly displayed “Abu Gosh: Home of The Guinness Book of World Record’s Largest Plate of Hummus”. Low and behold, there was a photo of an entire village standing around a swimming pool sized plate of hummus. I soon found out who funded that endeavor, and why there were so many nice cars parked outside, when the owner came over to chat with us. Apparently his family in Illinois won the American lottery and gave him the money to open the restaurant.
The food soon arrived, and everything tasted fresh and delicious. It’s hard to say if it’s the best hummus in Israel, but it was pretty darn good. We returned to Tel Mond an hour later, just to be fed again by Tami. I feel like all we do on this trip is eat, but I’m ok with that plan.

Choco-be-sakit and Tali's Wedding
Day Five: Yom Hay
I must dedicate the first part of this entry to two of my favorite Israeli beverages – choco-be-sakit and ice cafĂ©. Choco-be-sakit is a bit of a novelty because of it’s packaging. It is chocolate milk in a bag. Why they chose to do this, I’m not sure, because you open the bag by biting the corner off with your teeth and then sucking out the drink. There is no way to set a half finished bag of chocolate milk down on a table without it spilling everywhere. The chocolate milk itself tastes heavenly though. Tami informed us that they are starting to phase out the bag packaging, and it’s getting harder to find in stores. This news made Don very sad, so we stocked the fridge with as many choc-be-sakits as we could fit.
My other drink obsession, ice cafĂ©, is essentially an Israeli frappuccino. Typically served from a slurpee machine, ice cafĂ© is amazingly refreshing in the blistering heat. I can’t explain why it tastes so much better than a Starbucks drink, but it just does. They tried to bring the Starbucks brand to Israel, but with an already flourishing coffee house culture established, it was a complete failure.
Today I got my first ice cafĂ© of the trip in Herzeliya. We went to the Marina, an upscale mall on the ocean with it’s own beach. The beach was absolutely packed with Israeli high school kids, and we later found out it was their first day of summer break. There were some intense games of matkot going on, a beach game with wood paddles and a rubbery ball that is hit back and forth. We tried to buy our own matkot set, but because of inflation, they were charging 150 shekels for them- about $40.
We gave up at the beach and tried to find a place to eat lunch. We settled on a fish restaurant and were seated at a table. The waitress barely acknowledged us, and came over a few minutes later and threw a stack of menus on the table apathetically. In general, I find that people in Israel come in two extremes. Either they are incredibly warm and go out of their way to make you comfortable, or they treat you like they are doing you a favor. The attitude of the waitress upset Nevo so much, that we decided to take our business elsewhere.
We relocated to a bistro with an ocean view on the Namal Tel Aviv. It just so happens that the opening scene of one of my favorite films- Waltz With Bashir, took place in this location, and large screen shots from the film hung on the wall. Don’s cousin Sagi surprised us and showed up on his bicycle. After eating, we walked the entire boardwalk into the heart of the city. We kept walking until the sun set and I fell asleep in an air conditioned McDonalds, waiting for Ofir to pick us up and drive home. It was the first night I slept past 6 am.
Day Six: Yom Vav
Since it was the day of Tali’s wedding, we wanted to take it easy, knowing we would be up all night. My uncle Pini and aunt Vered own a spa in Tel Aviv, so I called them and set up appointments for Nevo and Joanna as an anniversary treat. We were all ready to do, but when we tried to start the car we realized the battery was dead. The rental company sent a mechanic, but the wait time was uncertain- first they said fifteen minutes, then they said three hours. We cancelled the spa plan and decided to stay around Tel Mond instead.
I think Tel Mond is bad luck for cars. On my last trip to Israel, when my cousin Danielle was picking me up at Tami’s house, she took a wrong turn, drove over a boulder, and cut her brake fluid line. Despite all of that, I would rather wait out car troubles, than have the responsibility of driving in Israel. Everyone here has a tiny car that is covered in dirt, they weave in and out of traffic, and cut you off without signaling. Nevo says, “it’s like everyone here is playing Mariocart”.
Parking habits are also questionable. There is an ongoing competition for who can spot the worst parking job. When no parking spot is available in a parking lot, people frequently just create their own and abandon their car wherever there is space. I’ve seen cars parked on medians, facing the wrong direction, or scraping the bumper of the car behind them. Israeli’s seem nonchalant about all the bad driving. A woman was making a u-turn in front of us, but stopped halfway- perpendicular to oncoming traffic. The guy in the car trying to pass her rolled down his window and shouted, “You are not blocking the road at all!”
In the evening, we all got dressed up and headed to Tali’s wedding venue just as the sun was setting. It was located in an area with many farms and orchards. We drove down windy dirt roads, and arrived at a gorgeous grassy clearing with white furniture scattered under trees with lanterns hanging from the branches. There was a large dance floor, several appetizer stations, an open bar, and a cappuccino barista. Though we were among the first to arrive, the place was soon filled with over 300 guests, which I’m told is small for an Israeli wedding. At about 9 pm, everyone was summoned over to the chuppah for the wedding ceremony. It was hard to see what was going on, because the crowd was so big, but Nir and Tali exchanged their vows, and I could hear a glass being shattered as Nir stepped on it, a Jewish wedding custom to remind us of the destruction of the second temple.
The dinner buffets were opened and the guests mingled and ate. We kept finding Don’s little cousin Noam getting into trouble; trying to grab the coi fish from the pond with his bare hands, chasing all the little girls, and stealing sugar packets from the coffee station. The DJ started blaring an eclectic mix of electronic music, Hebrew and Arabic dance music, and 80’s American pop songs. Don preferred revisiting the dessert buffet to dancing. Though the couple getting married was Moroccan, this wedding was more traditionally Ashkenazic, or European, in style. I guess with Tali’s Hina party, they got the best of both worlds.

"All the best restaurants are in the backs of gas stations"
Day Four: Yom Daled
I spent my morning uploading my travel writings and photos to my blog and sent it to my family. Aaron responded almost immediately that my blog is banned in China. My phone rang around 7am, and it was my Saba (grandfather). He said he knew I was awake because he saw my updated pictures on facebook, otherwise he wouldn’t have called so early. He asked me to join him for lunch in a restaurant nearby called Unis, the exact same spot I met him for lunch three years ago. Don and his family were packing up to go to the beach, and Joanna asked me if I had any magazines she could borrow. I told her “Ya, I have the New Yorker”, and she laughed and said “wow, stop being so serious all the time”.
Tali dropped me off at the restaurant, which looked nothing like a restaurant from the outside- rather an extension of a gas station. “All the best restaurants are in the backs of gas stations”, Tali assured me. I found Saba sitting at a table with his wife, Kay, and my Aunt Tzipporah. Before I could sit down, there was a flurry of photo taking, and they all commented on how blue my eyes are and how I should gain some weight. Not a difficult thing to accomplish at a place like this.
The waiters started bringing out plates and plates of salads and a huge stack fresh pita. I filled up on tabouli, hummus, cabbage salad, grilled eggplant, and fifteen other identifiable but delicious appetizers. Just when I thought I couldn’t eat anymore, the waiters came over to take our order. I thought we already had eaten the whole meal, but additional plates of shish kebab, lamb, and fish, were brought out.
The owner of the restaurant came over to chat with my family, and I was introduced as their American granddaughter who is trying to learn Hebrew. He turned to me and in slow Hebrew said “ Oh! If you worked here, you would learn Hebrew very fast!” My family laughed and said “see you have a job here already”.
After doing some catching up, Turkish coffee, baklavah, and a yoghurty-type of flan drenched in rosewater were brought out for dessert. I literally couldn’t take another bite. The meal could have probably fed an additional five people. Don suddenly appeared to pick me up on his way home from the beach, and my grandfather frantically pulled out his camera and started snapping pictures again. With an overly full stomach and hundred-degree heat, I needed a nap to recover. I woke up at sunset, unfortunately dragging my jet lag out one more day.
I spent my morning uploading my travel writings and photos to my blog and sent it to my family. Aaron responded almost immediately that my blog is banned in China. My phone rang around 7am, and it was my Saba (grandfather). He said he knew I was awake because he saw my updated pictures on facebook, otherwise he wouldn’t have called so early. He asked me to join him for lunch in a restaurant nearby called Unis, the exact same spot I met him for lunch three years ago. Don and his family were packing up to go to the beach, and Joanna asked me if I had any magazines she could borrow. I told her “Ya, I have the New Yorker”, and she laughed and said “wow, stop being so serious all the time”.
Tali dropped me off at the restaurant, which looked nothing like a restaurant from the outside- rather an extension of a gas station. “All the best restaurants are in the backs of gas stations”, Tali assured me. I found Saba sitting at a table with his wife, Kay, and my Aunt Tzipporah. Before I could sit down, there was a flurry of photo taking, and they all commented on how blue my eyes are and how I should gain some weight. Not a difficult thing to accomplish at a place like this.
The waiters started bringing out plates and plates of salads and a huge stack fresh pita. I filled up on tabouli, hummus, cabbage salad, grilled eggplant, and fifteen other identifiable but delicious appetizers. Just when I thought I couldn’t eat anymore, the waiters came over to take our order. I thought we already had eaten the whole meal, but additional plates of shish kebab, lamb, and fish, were brought out.
The owner of the restaurant came over to chat with my family, and I was introduced as their American granddaughter who is trying to learn Hebrew. He turned to me and in slow Hebrew said “ Oh! If you worked here, you would learn Hebrew very fast!” My family laughed and said “see you have a job here already”.
After doing some catching up, Turkish coffee, baklavah, and a yoghurty-type of flan drenched in rosewater were brought out for dessert. I literally couldn’t take another bite. The meal could have probably fed an additional five people. Don suddenly appeared to pick me up on his way home from the beach, and my grandfather frantically pulled out his camera and started snapping pictures again. Tali's Hina
Day Three: Yom Gimmel
Waking up early again, I tried to practice reading the Israeli newspaper. Rather than news of violent conflict, which usually dominates the international news coverage of Israel, I was surprised to see that the top story was about “cottage cheese wars”. Israel has some of the best dairy products in the world, and apparently the price foreigners pay for imported Israeli cottage cheese is far less than what Israelis have to pay for their own products. This information caused an outrage leading to a nation wide boycott of cottage cheese. The impact was severe enough that the company drastically dropped their prices, making the dairy delight affordable again. Note to self: stock up on cottage cheese ASAP. It’s best served at breakfast on toast with Israeli salad.
At a more reasonable hour of the day, the house began buzzing in preparation for Tali’s bridal party. In Hebrew, the event is called a “Hina”. It sounds like “Tahina”- the sesame seed paste commonly served on falafels, just without the “ta”. The Hina is a Moroccan custom, where the mother of the bride throws an elaborate party for her betrothed daughter. The occasion involves traditional costumes, a smorgasbord of desserts, lots of dancing, and the ceremonial adornment the bride and groom to be with henna paste.
Tami hired a company to help put on this production. They arrived several hours before the party and transformed their backyard into a scene from Casablanca. A tent was erected with a white throne, and there were gold teapots on top of tables with ornate tapestries, cushions on the floor, and candles flickering in every corner. They carted in a massive grill, called a Taboun, where they made fresh pita bread for the guests. A rack of embroidered kaftans, fez hats, and scarves stood by the door for guests to choose a costume from. After the food was served, loud music began blaring from the living room and women began to gather on the dance floor clapping their hands and making loud trill noises I can’t replicate.
Tali and Nir, the bride and groom to be, emerged from a room with lit up sparklers in their hands. Tali was dressed like a belly dancer with a long gold skirt and a bejeweled halter top. She had a headdress on with a gold ornament that hung over her third eye. Nir wore white flowy pants and a white tunic with an embroidered vest, looking very much like Aladdin. After their grand entrance, they made their way to the white throne in the tent. Once seated, they were presented with gifts and well wishes from their parents. The bowl of henna paste was brought to the couple, and they smeared it on each other’s palms. They put dots of henna on the palms of all the guests- a temporary tattoo, and way of proving “I was at that party”. After the paste was left to dry and washed off, it left an orange blob that looked like fake tanner that was left on for too long.
The jubilant crowd danced the night away and barely noticed when the costumes were packed up and the tent was taken down. It was quite a party. I felt bad for Nevo and Joanna, who arrived to the party directly from the twenty-some hour journey from Los Angeles. Bleary eyed, they eventually called it a night, and I followed suit.

Dispatches from Israel
So I've neglected posting anything for quite awhile, but now that I'm travelling, I feel the need to document my experiences. Here's what I've been up to lately.
Day One: Yom Alef
Though the last time I was in Israel was three years ago, everything is so familiar, it hardly seems like a different country. The heat will take some getting used to though. I’m trying hard to work on my Hebrew, a personal goal of mine, and I signed up for “ulpan” – an intensive Hebrew course, in two weeks. They sent me some practice tapes and I started listening to them on the plane. “Repeat these affirmations. Hebrew is easy and fun. I understand and speak Hebrew fluently. I progress rapidly in Hebrew”. Ok, I guess I can start with that. Even though I’m jet lagged, I’ve been trying extra hard to understand the rapid and loud conversations constantly going on in the background.
For now, we are staying at Don’s aunt Tami’s house. We have already been overfed with amazing dishes of cous cous, meatballs, home made pickles, schnitzel, and Israeli salad. Every trip to Israel I’ve been on so far has been a marathon of eating, where every family member competes to feed me the most. Last time, my grandmother even showed up at the airport with five bags of groceries for us, just in case we got hungry on the drive to the hotel.
After lunch, I fell asleep on the futon while Shalom, Don’s uncle, did wedding planning on the phone. I tried to listen – “sloshah anashim be shulchan sloshim veh chamesh…” It was like an advanced version of counting sheep and I fell asleep in minutes.
Day Two: Yom Bet
I woke up at 4am because of jet lag, and the neighborhood rooster cawing. I helped myself to a breakfast of croissant with nutella, and did some sun salutations of a makeshift yoga mat in the spare room. Don woke up, and we decided to take a walk around the neighborhood before the heat of the day set in. Tel Mond is essentially a suburb of Tel Aviv, located in Gush Dan. The houses here are big have nice patios. I can sense Don is very nostalgic for life here. He lingered at the soccer field, imagining his pleasant childhood in Israel.
Once everyone else woke up, we had another round of breakfast, and decided to go to the beach. We drove into Netanya to do some errands first, and I was reminded of the intense security measures that are part of daily life here. We stopped into Cellcom to buy SIM cards for our phones, and an armed guard checked bags at the door. I casually walked past him, oblivious to the protocol, and Don had to remind me that that’s a no-no. Thankfully, he didn’t chase after me because I wasn’t too suspicious looking. I just need to be more aware next time. We got some free purple slurpee drinks from Cellcom, and then headed out to the beach. It was fairly empty, and the weather was perfect. After such a harsh winter in Chicago, this was the first time my pale skin was exposed to sun. I barely went in the water though for fear of jellyfish. Last time I was in Israel, I was stung by one on my stomach, and I did not wish to repeat that experience. A dead one washed up on the beach, looking like a plastic bag, just reaffirmed my fears.
Several hours later, I returned home with a bright red circular sunburn on my chest, from the one spot I forgot to apply sun screen. After a five hour “nap”, the family all gathered at Dror’s house for Shabbat dinner. All of Don’s little cousins frolicked in the yard and threw pillows at each other. They did not remember me from my last visit, three years ago, and Noam even asked Don, “Where did you get this girl from?” I guess he was confused why I spoke so little Hebrew, but tickles and pillow fights seem to be pretty universal.

A Crafty Grad Party
For Don's graduation party, I got a little crafty and wanted to share the results. Since Don is a History major and loves to travel, I wanted to stick to a worldly "oh, the places you'll go" theme. I ordered the beautiful compass invites from Petite Paperie on Etsy. I took some old fold-out driving maps, and cut out envelope inserts to get that cool map pattern when you open the invite. We also used the maps to make a paper airplane garland. I love how that turned out. Lastly, I baked these amazing cupcakes, and Don made some mini hand-drawn flags from countries all over the world to stick on top of them. Everything looked so cute! It was a bummer that I got the flu the week of his graduation and couldn't share in all the festivities... Anyway, I recommend these little projects for your next shin dig.
Better Late Than Never
So, I realize it's been quite awhile since I posted anything here. That's partly due to my preoccupation with other projects (which are very exciting). Since I last posted, I have applied to two graduate schools, launched a community-building film program at the Library, continued part time teaching photography and media literacy to high school students, and started fund raising for 10,000 Trees- a short documentary project. I'm a busy lady. Never the less, I shall try to maintain presence here and share some of the exciting and inspiring things going on in life.
